Construction of the third municipal hospital in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin began in 1887. Until then, Berlin only had two municipal hospitals (the hospital in Friedrichshain from 1874 and the Moabit hospital from 1875), despite having a population of almost 1.6 million at the time.
