The ruling party of the GDR, founded on April 21, 1946, in East Berlin through the merger of the KPD and the SPD.

In the wake of the peaceful revolution, the party initially renamed itself the Socialist Unity Party of Germany – Party of Democratic Socialism (SED-PDS) in December 1989, and then the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) on February 4, 1990.
