After the National Socialists seized power in Germany, he visited Berlin one last time in early 1933 and narrowly escaped the Gestapo while fleeing to Switzerland. Meffert lived in Switzerland as an illegal political emigrant until 1935, after which he went by the name Clément Moreau. To avoid imminent arrest, Moreau went into exile in Argentina in 1935, where he lived and worked until 1961
